Seems like a reasonable answer. Is that the resistance of the sending unit or does that include the gauge?

You're not going to believe this...I went to double check my figures and I DROPPED MY METER ON THE CONCRETE GARAGE FLOOR AND IT BROKE INTO 3 PIECES!!!!!! So...off to AutoZone in the morning.....oh well. But I will definitely check my figures and report back.....

How far did you drop it? Anyway, curious how this turns out.

Sending units do vary. I purchased Vortech heads and bought a new sending unit because the threads were different. The one I purchased was recommended by someone on the forum. Unfortuanely it didn't read correctly. It read way to low. I installed the oringinal one with a bunch of adapters and it right back the way it should be, except for the horrible adapters.

I have a tester that has 2 -68 ohms resistors and you connect it to the green wire going to the engine sensor and then to ground. In other words you can give the gauge (via the green wire)68 ohms resistance or 136 ohms. The temps I posted are an average.

Got a temp sending unit that ain't calibrated correctly for your vette?

These guys have em that're calibrated correctly for C3 & look correct in correct 1/2" pipe size ... for under $20 ... how much is your time & aggravation worth?
http://www.lectriclimited.com/mainpage.htm

No ... they do not have them in smaller 3/8" pipe that're correctly calibrated.

The gauge went south. I checked the resistance at the gauge's connector and started the engine. As the engine temp rose, the resistance started to decrease toward "0"...so that tells me the sending unit is working and the wires are connected correctly....the ONLY thing left is the gauge itself..... Getting the new gauge tomorrow (Tuesday) from ZIP....if THIS doesn't fix it, I gues I need to replace the muffler bearings....I heard they usally are the culprit......

Default Found The Real Problem....

Found the REAL problem....it wasn't the sending unit.....it wasn't the gauge either....it was the dang-blam THERMOSTAT!!!!!! Aparently it failed-safe (in the open position)...thereby not letting the coolant temp raise...ergo the sending unit and the gauge was TELLING THE TRUTH....after all the time spent trying to fix this problem!!! oh well.... Changed the thermostat and WHAM...it was fixed.....
