Default Dynomat...how much do I need?

I am going to have my interior redone and want to lay down Dynomat everywhere. It is a 69 convertible. How much of this stuff do I need to cover the interior completely?

Based on the info from the Sound Deadner Showdown page, I'm going to use RAAMmat. It's supposed to work well, stick well, and the price is very nice.

Check this site out.

http://secondskinaudio.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?pg=1&p=ps

It's better than Dynamat, a little cheaper and a little thinner. Anthony, the owner is a great guy who will personally walk you through the install and tell you exactly how much you'll need. I would go through SecondSkin for all your sound and heat dampning needs.

You may also want to look at home depot or lowes for a product called peel and stick or something like that. I bought the last roll at HD. it is between 12 and 18" wide. It looks to me to be just like dynamat. I found it near some water heater blankets. If anyone else has used peel and stick product, let me know what you think. I am going to be installing mine soon.

In the car audio industry, PeelN'Seal is a popular way to sound deaden on a budget. It's cheaper. The problem comes with time, and heat. It's known for fumes when it gets hot...the asphalt base releases a fumey smell when it gets hot. In normal newer cars it's not even that bad but i can imagine in a car where the floors get so hot like a Vette that it'd be a lot more noticable.

The other common problem with the PeelN'Seal is that over time it loses it's adhesion. Under a carpet this isn't a problem, but if you're doing any part of the car that verticle or upside down, you may have issues with it coming down on you after a few months to a year.

I'm not saying don't buy it, because it may fit a budget better than a higher quality product. Dynamat and SecondSkin are top of the game...and you pay for that. I only know this because of spending many years in the car audio industry. You learn a lot about sound and heat dampners. I personally would use SecondSkin, Dynamat, or FatMat. Those are generally referred to as the top three among car audio enthusiasts.

The stuff is called Peel 'n Seel. I'm going to use it in my '54 GMC 1-ton panel truck because there is no way I could afford enough of anything else to cover the inside of that monstrous van body. I might use RAAMmat at the front.

Original Dynamat and FatMat are asphalt base and really no better than Peel 'n Seel. You have to go to the expensive butyl base Dynamat Xtreme to get the good stuff, and from what I hear it isn't much of an improvement over RAAMmat. SecondSkin I have heard great things about, but it comes at a cost.

Great site on sound deadeners: http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/

I managed to...well I should say, Joanne managed to install 2- 36 sq. ft boxes, plus 3 extra pieces for the doors. Needless to say, every square inch is Dynamated. Bit expensive, but well worth it!!! I have no heat problem here (72 LT-1). In stead of using jute... I used a product by Cool & quiet...Muddy For some reason I can not find old thread I started on the subject...I believe the title was "Check out Joannes handywork or something like that...Good luck

I will add, that using FatMat is a good way to go when thickness is a priority. It's very efficient for it's size, being half the thickness of Dynamat Extreme. I used it in my Vette because I was using a heat shield under the carpet and wanted to keep the overall thickness down.

I used Dynamat Extreme - works great !!

I think you need 2 pkgs of 36 square feet - I used one package and it covered the enitre front section - I still need to do the luggage compartment. I bought the dynamat off a vendor on ebay

Ebay is indeed the best place to get Dynamat Extreme for the same price as standard Dynamat. It's not asphalt based so you avoid fumes, and it's thicker, giving you better sound deadening and adhesion. I think the last time I bought Extreme on Ebay I got 36 Sq Ft for $99. Top notch deal according to what the local places sell it for.

Sorry, I Am just getting back, so I wanted to respond. The it was not peel and stick like I thought. It is actually called "duct insulation" This is not an asphalt based product. This has a thin layer of very dense foam (less than 1/4") glued to alumininum foil. It looks just like dynamat to me?????? You can find it near the duct products at Home Depot.

Hmm...I must have been confusing it with a similar named product found in home imrovement stores. I'm not familiar with the foam layered products, as they have less effect on sound insulation and more on heat.

With my interior out, I measured the entire surface area of the interior for this purpose. I tended toward too-much when there was not a clear rectangle of space. I also included the T-tops, doors (X2 for the fiberglass shell and another layer on the metal frame), storage boxes, under the hood, and the "roof" of the rear compartment.

Total was 150 sqft

Without some of the things listed above it is more like 100sqft. Assuming you use every scrap rather than cutting out shapes and discarding the waste.

$$$!

I learned a valuable lesson about buying cheap sound deadener once. You'll end up doing it all again, and spending just as much or more than the first time...so it's best to spend the dough first and get some quality product that will last you for many years.

I carefully did two layers of dynomat extreme. I did the entire interior, doors and Tee roofs taking my time and a double layer and I was not impressed.
originally I had used 1/2 inch felt I got for free but wanted the best.
Well the best didn't match the old felt for noise and heat insulation.
I got 2 packages or 39 square feet each and then had to buy another one to finish the job.
I did take the door skins off and do a careful job inside the doors.

Norval - What are all of those boxe units behind where the pass dash pad would go? Are they all ignition boxes?
