Default Steering column

Hello

I am in a center of a restauration of my car,an now have a problem with my steering column.I dont now how to separate the outer part of the column(the engine side,not on the steering wheel side.Why i wont to separate it is because i want to sand blast it an paint it.Is it some one that have a good picture soo i can see for my self how it is.I am from Sweden and i am not that good at english so if it is some one who can have an picture, i would be very happy.I have been asking here in the Swedish forum but is sems that nobody now how to do.

It is always very helpful to indicate what year Corvette and what type of steering column that you have. I now see from your hotmail address that it is probably a 1969. From looking closely at your photograph of the lower end of the steering column, I can see a spring that loads the lever and shift tube. So the column must be a standard (non-adjustable) one.

My information indicates that there should be a clamp with a nut and bolt on the steering shaft just outside of the lower bearing shown in your photograph. The clamp was only used in 1969. I do not know why it was required just that one year and not the others. The rest of the lower end parts were the same in the following years. But in either case, your column does not have the clamp.

To disassemble the lower end parts, you should start by removing the Retaining Clip #60. Then the Retainer #59, the Adapter #57 and Bearing Assembly #58, and the Shift Tube Return Spring #56 should slide out of the Steering Column Jacket #42.

You will find that the Shift Tube Assy #48 will have to remain in the Steering Column Jacket. You will not be able to remove it. The Shift Tube Assy is a press fit to what is called the Gear Shift Lever Bowl #39 at the upper end. There is not a good way to undo the press fit without a special tool.

Just remember, additional help is only a computer click away.
