Default sloppy steering

wassup guys. My vette has the stock suspension in it so the steering has gotten sloppy due to variously worn parts im sure. I was wondering about 2 things though:

1. Where can I get a suspension kit for this car, hopefully one not too labor intensive, I want new everything including springs

2. anyone ever taken power steering out of this car? I drove a 280Z without power steering so I can handle it, but can the wheel/steering column handle my tremendous amounts of arm strength? lol

thoughts and suggestions needed!

my car is a 77 (important detail right? )

Ask who ever you buy from where the parts are from. Many parts are now imported and some kits may be made up mixed parts from all over.

MOOG has been making the best suspension parts for years here in the USA, but I haven't found a complete kit with real MOOG parts in them yet. Hopefully someone is selling them. I've heard of USA made parts in some kits but they were never ID'd as MOOG. MOOG parts can be bought at any good parts store but in individual parts and they add up to lot more then the packaged kits.

You have to decide on rubber vs poly too. There is a lot of debate on which to use, I always use rubber.

Then look up my buddy Lars paper on doing this job. He does an excellant job on this whole procedure. Then all you have to do is the job!

good luck

Gary

Karioth, I have that same kit w/ the exception of the #460 front coils. I have the #550's, because they lower the front about an inch and I am now running Aluminum heads, intake, water pump and radiator. I took alot of wieght out of the front, and the car allready sat kinda high w/old coils. I cant tell ya about ride yet I'm still waiting to re-instal the front a-arms. I have poly bushings in mine. I also ordered a front end rebuild kit at the same time( also 4 wheel brake kit w/calipers, rotors, and new master cyl). I am Sooooo close to pulling OUT the power steering! I was not impressed at all with the road feel. Over boosted, and not much feed back. I drove another 72 w/out p.s. and it felt good. Ya, you gotta man handle it if you wanna do 3 point turns OR parallel park all day, but for the most part, once those wheels are rolling, your good. Once this things back together its going for full alignment. Also chk rag joint at box, mine was dry rotted and worn. Complete joint still availble thru G.M. I think I paid $80. Good luck.

The column will take the forces of manual steering. I have run manual steering in my '69 for over 30 years. I believed L88 427s were available ONLY with manual steering.

There is a lock nut and set screw on the steering box that adjusts some of this. In or clockwise tightens.

For the price of a good steering box and a manual drag link, you could convert to a Jeep strreing box (approx $650). The forum has had numerous discussions about the Jeep box, most favorable. Please search the archives.
