How do you stop it from spinning? There is no way using a rag an gloves will hold it when using the air.
Actually, I have done this several times with NO gloves or rag. Just hold the pulley tight in your hand. Put the impact gun and socket on the nut, and pull the trigger. It may tug at your hand a little, but the nut should come right out. The glove or rag just helps if the nut is being a pain, and the pulley slips a lot. Give it a shot, and you'll be a believer. I wasn't until I finally tried it.
Here's how I do it if you can visualize it --provided you cant break it free while it's still in the car.
Take the alternator out of the car.
Insert the allen wrench (the shorter end) into the middle nut.
Then, using a bench vise, put the other end of the allen wrench into the vise. You might have to turn the alternator sideways depending upon the height of your vise.
Then loosen the nut with a wrench. You may have to smack the wrench with a hammer.
Another method that protects the hands is to obtain a strap wrench. Similar to an oil filter wrench. I've used this several times. Strap locks on pulley to enable removing nut.

This is how I got mine off, BUT...my problem was getting the half shell off the shaft...took it to a alt rebuild shop and they pressed it off in a second...I probably could have gotten it off myself eventually, Mr Impatient here...I wanted to pay him, he shook his head, smiled and said..."Have fun" (I mentioned it was off my 76 Corvette)

Could you press the cases on and off easily with a press like can be bought at Harbor Freight? I have access to one of those, and a few alts I want to de-case.
i got mine off today..... i took a longer allen wrench (L) and used the a-arm to hold the pressure of the allen....then used an adjustable to loosen the bolt........ i would recommend some wd to help get the fan off...
Got it off using the air gun. The speed and torque of the gun broke the nut free. I didn't even need to hold the shaft. The most difficult part of the rebuild was pressing the new bearings in.

Is this an original numbers matching case you're trying to keep? Are you rebuilding it with a higher voltage this time?

All thats too it, a 2-3 second job! Put it back on by reversing the proceedure.

It's the original...I'm trying to keep it numbers matching as much as possible. I kept the amps and volts original. If I had to do it over again...I would have bought a rebuild and swapped the guts and gave the core back with my old parts and new housing.....oh well.
I bead blasted the housing and didn't realize there was a rear bearing, until it was back together becuase it didn't want to spin very easy, so now I have taken it all back apart to change the rear bearing.
After the bead blasting I used aluminum polish on the hosuing and it looks great.
Never had a problem removing one with a 1/2 inch drive impact. The short fast burst with the gun should be enough to break it free. If you dont have an impact gun, just take it to a local garage. Should have it off in 10 seconds or less and i doubt if they will charge you a fee for doing it. Offer a tip or box of donuts for the workers as a nice gesture. I done this for all my customers n/c while i still had my garage.
good luck.........
