With my key out of the igniton, and steering wheel locked on my automatic 1981; I can still move the shifter thru the gears. Any idea what would allow this?
Currently got the console apart on my '81 (to adjust the starter safety lockout switch thing) & there's nothing there to stop the shifter from being moved if the key is out, etc. Think that may have been some sort of anti-theft thing on earlier models & was considered redundant with the factory alarm fitted. That's just a guess
Hmm i thought there was some kind of interlock cable runing from the ingnition switch to the tranny on those later sharks......
From reading the manuals, so did I, but I haven't seen anything in place to stop the shifter from being moved. It's a pity that I didn't see this post yesterday as I could have taken a picture of it, but I've now got the cover balanced roughly in place with all the electrics, vac pipes, cables, etc, hooked up & really, really don't want to take it all off again (as well as all the stock wiring, mine also has an alarm system fitted under the console - can anybody say "Bird's nest"?!!).
I don't think anything would lock the shifter in the console area. On earlier models a cable from the steering wheel colum to the transmission locks the shifter.
The problem is, if you leave your car in gear, remove the key, your car could roll down the road, and that's what almost happen to me.
I have noticed the same thing on my 81. On one hand it makes it easier to push it back and forth when working on it. On the other hand I try to remember to use the e-brake.
Just went and checked my '81 and durn, it DOES come out of park without the key in!!! I had never even thought of trying it before, just always turned the key when I wanted to move the shifter. Moving the car around in the garage will be alot easier now
Well, I can tell you that 78s and 79s don't have any shifter lockout, either for 4speed or automatic.
I remember my 69 GTO with 4speed. Linkage from the transmission connected to the steering column. When you put it in reverse a collar on the column inside the car turned. Without that collar turning you couldn't lock and remove the key.
Over here people park in front or behind parked cars so you leave the car in neutral so people can move the car out of the way to get out. Now of cause I don't park the Vette in these kind of parking areas but I would guess in its day it was. BTW the 4 speed don't lock when the key is removed. You do have to depress the clutch to start it(a good thing)
I have a 81 and after reading this post I gave it a try and sure enough the shifter does not lock. I recently had the console apart and don't remember seeing any type of cable or locking device. Does anyone know if the anti-theft was standard on 81's?
