starter wiring question?
Hello all, Im replacing the original starter with a new one. the old has 1 prong and the new has 2 prongs,on the silonoid.(besides the battery prong in the middle) . I dont want to wire this wrong and cant find this in the FAQ section?, should I wire all the same little connections on the inner prong?(closest to the engine), I think this is right?
also if this is correct what is the outer prong used for?, (possibly key on ?, cranking power on?, ?????) tks
Dang I hate when I cant find that 1 piece of paper that shows the correct way to wire a part
tks again

The inside small terminal is the start control and should have the purple wire. The outside terminal is the by-pass to the coil which gives full voltage to the coil for starting. That wire should be pink. If you have installed electronic ignition you can just leave off the by-pass wire off. If you have original ignition you may have starting problems. I assume that it is a new high torque starter which comes with only one terminal.

I don't remember which prong is which, but the second one is to put 12 volts to the coil during starting. This is only used for points ignition with the resistor wire feeding the coil. If you have an HEI, the second prong isn't used (or shouldn't be there).
That said, hooking it up wrong shouldn't hurt anything. It just won't work.
