I think an early had a bent lever and the late was straight.

All 78's use the bent lever, the early /late thing did not come into play till 79.
Early 79's had the bent lever, and the three compartment storage doors behind the seat, late 79's had a straight lever and a two compartment storage door.
The bent lever with cruise is a hard part to find, the best bet is to install a straight lever and pivot if you are not looking to be orignal.
Is this on the 78 SA you are building a race car out of?
Did you ever get the aftermarket guages you wanted in the car?
Send me a PM, I am the one in Victoria that got some of the other parts you had off the car.
I may be able to help you with the pivot, I replaced the one in my 78 PC.
Thanks, Mark G

GM still sells the Pivot part you are talking about. I picked one up at the dealer.

I have the part number for the late 79 to 82 dimmer pivot. It is 7833704 and is still listed on the GM Parts Direct websight. It would be used with the straight turn signal lever.

The earlier dimmer pivot was 7833283. It is no longer listed on GM Parts Direct but it may still be available if your dealer will conduct a search for you. Otherwise, eBay or other resources will be required.

Jim wont both levers work in both pivots? And also doesnt the early pivot have a hex head bolt and the later is a press pin?I'm pretty sure the pivots cant be interchanged but the levers can.

You know, at one point I had three dimmer pivots listed. One of them made reference to a bolt. I searched, but couldn't find anyone at Saginaw engineering that could remember the differences (only a 28 year old technical question). I think that I deleted reference to the dimmer pivot with bolt because I couldn't get any information on it. It must have been an early 1978 design. It most likely required a special lock housing for the bolt to thread into. I am afraid that the bolt design was in production for such a short term, the service parts are extremely rare.

I will look for the pivot with bolt part number, but so far, I haven't had any luck.

Look what I found at the Eckler's websight.

I am not really sure which pivot this one is:

This one uses a bolt:

OK the first link is the pivot with the bolt and it is GM#7833702 (early)
The second link is the pivot with the pin GM#7833704 (late)
EDIT-If anyone is interested these are both in group#2.459
