Remove the cable and slather the inner cable with white lithium grease. Make sure you dcon't get to close to the ends so none can get into the speedo itself. You'll be good for another 20 years. I believe Eckler's sells a gun just for this if you are inclined to go that route. I just took mine apart when I did it.

My 1980 L82 had the same problem. I learned along time ago to use graphite. You can go to Auto Zone or where ever and buy grapfite powder in a small plastic container. I unscrewed the speedo under the hood and sprinkled some around and over the end. It will find its way back to the speedo after about a day of driving. Works every time.

I agree; graphite is the way I did it. I actually disconnected the cable from the spedometer and pulled the cable from the housing, dropped graphite down the housing and put the cable back in while turning it near the end to engage at the transmission. Right quiet after that.

Allthough the cables CAN cause this, I have found the noise is primarily from the speedo head itself.....which in order to fix/ohaul properly need be pulled and totally dis assembled, needle off the movement, card off the mount, and the mount taken apart....tedious, best done on kitchen table under good lights....
