Given the choose between the two, which would you rather have in your c3 and why? I figure it would cost roughly the same to convert my 350 4bolt truck engine to blown 350 as it would to go get a junkyard 454 and rebuild it to the hilt. What do you think? :smash:

The small block Chevy is the most popular engine ever produced, therefore it is the cheapest to build no matter what configuration you decide on. I just read in a magiazine (can't remember which one) that there have been 64 million SBC engines produced since the 50's....WOW :yesnod: :yesnod:
Yeah, i love my 350 and parts are easy to come by. I'm leaning toward the blown 350. It's hard to pass up the eye appeal of a blower scoop sticking out of the hood. Although eye appeal never made a car run faster, I think a blower is the exception to that rule.
How can anyone pass up mass cubes throwing all its weight around?
A shake, rattle, n-roll of a big block compared to a small block (of any configuration) gets much more respect.
Okay, here's what I would do.
Blow the 350 first, just out of curiosity, and also because it would be a lot cheaper. Then see what you think. If you like it, keep it. If you prefer the torque of the gods of a BBC, then you know you could sell your blown 350 and pay for damn near half of the new big block. Besides, you've got a great package helping to advertise the engine inside!!!
I'd go for a whipplecharger if I were you. Much better low end torque than a centrifugal, and more compact than a roots. Also might get it all in under an L88 hood (which you could also use for your big block if you so choose).
I would go for the blown 350. I would use a blower not a supercharger for the down low torque. I have a 8-71 blown bigblock and it has unreal bottom end power.

Re: blown 350 vs 454 (honaker)
Small block configuration is my only easy route too. I have always dreamed of buying one. Also thought under the hood with vortec and tpi would be a cool set-up. The blower out of the hood has the  look.
How about a 350 with a turbo kit. Maybe add some juice. Less wieght more power.
A small block doing 10's in the 1/4 is gets alot more respect than a big block doing the same 10s.
To buy the 8-71 blower, 2 850 carbs, linkage, blower pistons, engine studs, new severe duty ss valves and freshening up cost me $9000 CDN. Was it worth it? Hell Yes.

theandies - I read an article about the quanitty of small blocks built from 1955 to 1987. It stated that if you collected every small block built & lined them up, end to end, they would easily cover the distance from Los Angeles to New York.
I say go for the big block. The prices are just going to go up, so get one now. You can't beat the power of a rat.
:U (& fuel consumption)
A few months back, I met up with Monty, and saw his 427 small block.
I'm full of envy!!!
Its built up with the World Product's Motown block, and has (I think) a 4 inch crank.
This is a pricey combo, but with about 650 hp, I think you can forget about having to use a blower or turbo.
My dream is to get a 427 motown, and put on those 4 valve per cylinder heads I've read about in Hot Rod or CHP.
I think it'd be real unique to be able to say you've got a 32 valve 600hp 427 small block under the hood!
Damn, this is a difficult choice, already have the built 454 (for now), and the new toy is a blown big block. I think I'll stick with the minority on this one.... I want a blown big block...
Elkgrove, those heads you're thinking about are made by Dominion Performance. I have a number for them somewhere if you're serious. Write me and I can try to dig it out. Not cheap though. When I checked 2 years ago, they cost around 7 grand for a set. That's not the most cost effective way to speed. The big block probably is...or supercharger.
No offense to Monty of course.
70Purp, beautiful paint job, dude!
I too am building a strong big block for my 68 Vette. However, I love the rush of turbos on a small revvy engine. But rather than buy another Vette, I might twin turbo a 377 for my 87 IROC instead...just for something different.
Someday...
There is no reason a blown motor should have a shorter life span then a built to the hilt big block. I had the built to the hilt big block. It had a wild cam so it idled like poorly, was thinking of something else, had wild heads that wouldn't breath till 5000 then went to 8000 like a raped ape. Poor gas milage, 5000 stall convertor , 4.11 gears and no overdrive. Now I have the same cubic inches but 10-12 lbs of boost, a mild cam that will idle all day without loading up, and give 15-18 inches of vacuum, no high stall convertor and best of all lots of torque at 1500rpm with the same high flow heads and no need to rev past 6500. I get 12 mpg around town, no loaded plugs just smooth power without revving.
Who will last longer?

I think Monty is running dart heads on his ride...
I was thinking of copy-catting his shortblock, and adding those Dominion heads you've mentioned.
When I read about them, they said the heads start at around 3 grand. But I believe your statement that they are asking 7 grand.
i would prefer a bigblock for looks/sound but other than displacement its not that much better than a small block bored to the max especially one of the new world motown blocks
either that or an aluminum block 454 with aluminum heads a nice cam and a five speed just so you never have to rev or down shift
Blown 350 i have one now in my 65 chevy pick up and the power is great you would be very happy. The down side is in the vette it will not hide under the hood. If it would i would pull mine and put it in my vette.
