well i bought a 383 stroker, installed it, runs great.
we are having trouble getting started adjusted because the only way to tell is when its engaged, we broke 2 starters in half.
and now im really pissed because we broke a tooth off the fly wheel, and me and my father do not want to pull the tranny and exhuast again to put a new one on, were thinking of just welding a beed there and grinding it till its the right size.
but any who is there a away to engage it without trying the engine so we can tell how many shims we need?
with the starter mounted you should be able to pull the starter gear out (ie toward the flywheel) by hand or pry it with a tool (screwdriver, pliers, etc.) far enough to make it "mate" with the flywheel. check to make sure you have adequate overlap between the starter gear teeth and the flywheel teeth. you should check it in several positions on the flywheel to be sure. does the starter engage now? where is it breaking? the gear, or something else?

the case of the starters broke or sheild around the teeth as you will, then we put shims on the new started and it started the engine fine, then we stryed to start it again and it sound like a start broke around, but this time is was a tooth on the flywheel
