I'm in the market for a new timing light as my old Sun piece finally bit the dust. Does anyone have the Actron digital readout CP7529 timing light. I'm curious if it has a "dial back" function and how it performs.
I have an old MAC Tools one that has served me well for 20+ years. I do not need a dial back as my balancer is fully degreed. I have used a forum members dial back on his car and I liked it a lot. I liked having the tach on it to. Something mine does not have. Can't help you on yours that you are asking about.
I bought the digital one from Sears this weekend. It has the tach built in and you can dial back and all very nice.

I recent bought a new timing light from O'Reilly to figure out what was going on with my GMPP 350 HO. I bought a conventional strobe type with advance feature but no tach. The advance feature is great for seeing your total advance.
A tach feature would be nice, but I couldn't justify the price difference for the number of times I expect to use it. I am applying those delta $$ to more parts for winter restore/repair/upgrade project.

Yep, that's the one I'm after too. I have it on my X-Mas list, hope Santa can deliver . Right now I'm using an old Sun Inductive Timing light, non dialback of course. The light is not very bright and difficult to see outside. I tried my buddies Sears Inductive light and it's way brighter. The added feature of the tach is really nice also on the digital one.
So can someone explain how - in simple terms - a dial-back timing light works. For some reason I can't get my mind wrapped around it.
For it to work you need a good TDC mark on the balancer that lines up with a pointer on the engine correctly @ TDC????
With a good solid known TDC mark can you set the dial back for 32 degrees BTDC and the gun will fire where 32 should be so lining up the marks = 32 deg BTDC????? Is this correct????
Going a little farther I have a 89 chevy 350 TBI that I think the Dist is off 1 tooth which as I remember is about 15 degrees and or the pointer on the timing cover is way off. When I set the static timing to 4 degrees by the standard timing light it won't run or shift right. If I crank the distributer and time by ear the timing mark is way off on the marks.
I'm trying to find a way to determine what the timing is and thought a dial back may be able to tell me that????

well the dial back just sets everything up with the TDC mark and you read the dial to see what the timing is.... this is most effective when you rev the engine and the timing mark flys off the indicatior tab with a conventional timing light..... this is all relative so i don't see how it will help you with your issue
