Default What final hone grit?

Ok, I am putting together a 383 for my brothers camaro and was wondering what stone grit should the final hone be used for the crosshatch to work well and allow the rings to seal. I have assembled several engines starting with a short block but this is my first complete build. I have .040 pistions and the machine shop gave me back the block bored out to .037" over and said to use a hone for the final size. well I did a rough hone till my clearance was close. about .040". speedpro recommends the final bore to be .041" so I figure the cross hatch final hone will get me there.

Thanks Guys

The Grit depends on your rings as in who made them. It should tell you on the package. If not contact the company that the rings came from for the information you need.

Some rings do great with a 320 and some require 400 or finer.

Yea, I never thought about looking up the ring manufacture's recommendations, didnt know they differed. I got perfect circle rings, pn 40564cp. I'll check if they have that information on their site, if not I'll make a phone call. nothing was said on the ring installation instructions. Thanks guys for the help.

Pretty sure that ringpak is not a race ringpak but its top ring does have a molybdenum-coated face ... once you've got it honed with stone to NEAR-finish size ... latest tech is to use a bottlebrush hone and turn it in OPPOSITE rotation from stone-hone's rotation ... levels plateau produced by stone-hone ... latest tech that's best for seating moly.

I'm amazed at how rings seat these days when everything is done right. I did a leakdown test on my 454 before it was ever started and got 8%-16%. Started it up and let it run 15 minutes, mostly idling. Did another leakdown and got 6%-7%. Rings had already seated! Plugs had absolutely no oil on them and there was never any smoke out the exhaust.

I can not help with the stone selection but I would offer this: I have used a fresh scotch brite pad and some WD-40 on the last 2 engines to polish the bores before assy and I would do it again. Just spray the WD-40 in the bore after you have the block thoroughly clean and polish it a bit with the scotch brite pad. The honed finish is a little too rough as delivered from the machine shop and the pistons and rings will appreciate the smoother surface.

The oil seems to be cleaner for some reason when drained but who knows?
