Great to know...I will probably be putting in remote start too when I get my EFI system installed and running good.
Automatic is no problem, but if you have a 4 speed like me. I wouldn't do it. There are kits available for stick but they eventually screw up. That means you hit the remote start button and the car is in gear and she leaps forward into the next car, wall or even worse someone walking in front of the car.
They look like the two wire Ebay units...they can be bought for $7 each. I bought the kit that has the five wire units...easier to connect to the keyless kits.
You can find the kits on ebay for around $25.00, a lot cheaper than putting together everything in my opinion.
If you put a kit together I would be interested to see what materials you would use and the price.
Good luck!
Hey, LJake, I going to check that out, not for the vette, but for the work van...tired of all that damn locking/unlocking crap, and fetching keys.....I have thought of junkyard route, but maybe for the 4 actuators, not the whole thing, NOW....
i don't want to hijack, but i've been thinking about a proximity type system that wouldn't allow the starter to engage without the key(transmitter) nearby for theft deterence. any thoughts?

Bimmer uses those with their new cars, and while they are very popular...it's a lot easier for car jackers to steal them. All the need is a variable frequency transmitter cycling through various open and start codes. Be careful with a proximity system like that.

How exactly is running 5 wires to each door easier than running only 2? That sounds a lot like what my wife calls "man math"!!!
example: I buy something that costs $159.99. She asks how much it cost, and I say "It was only like $100". Man math!!!

I don't recall, but there were two different ways to install, and having five wire actuators was a system similar to what car's have anyway. The two wire setup is a ground switch system that requires extra relays. It was much easier the five wire way as I recall.
Interesting topic! I would think remote start systems for stick cars would have a gear-lock of some kind. Like when you can't start you auto car because it's not in neutral or park.
Related: My '79 has these emergency lockswitches inside. Could those actuators be used for a remote system? Or: could I replace those with the actuators from a new remote system, because the one on the passenger side died on me I think.

You hook the start wire ahead of the safety nuetral switch (Bypass) so the clutch doesn't have to be engauged, so the car will leap forward if it is in gear. There is a company that uses lazers to monitor the shifter, so it has to be in neutral position to start, but after year of use and vibration, I was worried about the lazers shifting. I always stayed away from manual cars, saw to many mistakes and upset people. Not worth the aggravation.

Yes, but only because an actuator is an actuator. There are just a few different ways to wire them. A positive switch method, or a ground switch method. It just depends on what kind of actuators they are.
i've been looking into doing this with my car too. the only thing that i don't like is that all the remotes in the kits i find have a trunk button, and obviously i don't need that. does anyone know of a kit that simply has the lock and unlock buttons?!?

Just look around. I found a kit for both the Vette and Charger, several years apart, that had three buttons only. A lock, unlock, and Aux.
While I do like remote start on vehicles that you have to go out in the cold and drive everyday I wouldn't want this on my carburated, non choked, big cammed stroker engine. I want to be right there when it starts.
One good unattended backfire and the vette, garage, and everything else around could go up in smoke.

It will be pretty hard to find a 2 button remote with lock and unlock. Most two buttons are lock/unlock button 1 and trunk button 2
I haven't had the time but I wanted to take a GM Keyless out of a Suburban or something like that and wire the keyless in to the vette. I could have the factory remote. Not that factory is really good, distance sucks.
DEI did get the OE contract a few years back for GM Parts Departments. That means you could buy an aftermarket Keyless or alrm with GM remotes. I would think some GM stores must still have some of those and if they do, I'm sure they would cut a deal to get rid of it.

I agree
I have my wifes car set up, when she hits the button to remote start her car, it also opens the garage door. If she turns the remote start off it closes the door. If the car is outside the garage door opener doesn't get signal.

My head hurts...could you start over and go over that again?
What do you mean. My wife has a remote starter on her car, she won't own a car without it.
You lost me when you started getting into the various scenarios with the door open and the door closed and the eclipse of the moon, and southern winds...
