Pre-oiling BB with a drill motor question?
You can buy a oil pump primer from GM Performance Parts catalog. I think it costs $30 to $40. I bought mine from Scroggin Dicky (They are the forum sponsor that uses the logo SDPC). Works fine. It works with for either SB's or BB's. Did have to go out and buy one of the bigger electric drills to run the thing. I think to use the oil primer, if you use an electric drill, you need a 1/2 inch drill (7.5 amps). The Sears Craftsman 1/2 inch drill was a bit pricey. Anyhow, once I got the drill everything worked really well.
When I primed the oil pump/oil lines, the engine was on a stand. So I alternated oil pumping sessions by using a flywheel turner to slowly rotate the flywheel by 720 degrees.
I also mounted a simple external oil pressure guage to keep a check on things while running the drill, and turned the engine by hand a half-revolution at a time between priming. But this was fairly simple on my engine stand. In my case, it took about 30 seconds for the oil pump to take hold and circulate oil on a new GMPP crate engine. Assembly lube is not enough by itself.
