My 72 small block started fine, went for a short ride and tried to start it up a few hours later. Heard a pop then wouldn't start, seemed flooded, put pedal to floor but when did start it sputtered and was blowing greyish smoke out the rear and the smell of gas was prevalent. Any suggestions, tried it tonight with the same results. Never had a starting problem before.
Power valve, no doubt. BUT, you must find out why it "poped" through the intake to begin with, or you may ruin the new one as well. I think Holley has designed a "blowproof" valve to help eliminate this problem.
sounds like you picked up some crud in the float valve...pull off the eye plug on the float bowl and if gas comes out the float is stuck...tapping on the top of the float valve with the end of a screwdriver sometimes works...if not pull out the valve and clean it...there is nothing better than a Holley but they are very susceptible to even minute particles in the fuel... :seeya
To replace the power valve, remove the carburetor from your engine, remove the primary float bowl, remove the metering block to access the power valve. If the carburetor has not been apart in a while, you'll probably ruin the gaskets when you remove the float bowl and metering block. Probably a good idea to have a renew kit handy when you start. To get the correct renew kit, check the LIST # on the air horn of the carburetor, and take that with you to the parts store. Last time I bought a Holley renew kit, I found it at a Schucks, however, I believe you can also order the kit directly from Holley. Log on to http://www.holley.com and all the info you need should be there.
Sounds like a backfire blew the power valve. I have seen ads for a new Holley power valve that's supposed to be "blow-out proof" (Gen V or something like that)....
the power valves are the same, later carbs have a one way valve in the power valve passage to prevent the backfire from hitting the PV. holley sells a kit to install the one way valve in older carbs. :chevy

No, they don't have a blowproof valve yet. But they do install a check ball on that vacuum line in the new carbs.
You can order one from Summit for a few bucks. It is in the carb. section. Basically you just drill and screw in a check ball that wont let an engine backfire toast the power valve.
