Hey All,
I am pretty sure my tachometer filter is toast and instead of spending 60 bucks for one, i would like to try and make one. I found the following info
But I am not super electrically minded so can anyone convert that into a standard wiring diagram for me? I would love for this to cost 5 bucks and some time rather than 60 bucks.
I went and looked for it, but couldn't find it. Anyway, I found the following on the net.
I made one from the schematic on the forum, I don't remember if it was like this one or not, but it worked. It only cost me like 2 bucks in parts from Radio Shack and I had parts left over.

This is my tach filter mounted on my 76's intake manifold, see arrow.
Diagram of parts in tach filter. X plugs into distributor, Y connects to connector going to tach. Gound is the case grounded to manifold.
Four parts other then the case, 5.6k and 10k 1/2watt resistors, a .10mf and a 100pf capacitor.
Also I don't know where I got this but it's good.

I think its unlikely, but possible the tach filter is the source of your problems. A change of Tach filter has often helped when the tach didn't work at all because the filter was open circuit. I don't recall too many cases of an erratic tach being fixed by a filter change (in the last year that I've been watching). Try putting in a quicky filter with R2=10K and C2=100nF. And yes I mean just the two parts. Its so close to the "real" filter that If that doesn't fix it, a new filter won't either.

Hope this helps.

Awesome guys! That is just what I am looking for. I am pretty sure it is the filter cause when I bypass it, the tach works just fine. Looks like I am headed to radio shack tonight.
Hey CarrilJC, when you make yours, how did you house it? Did you wrap it in electrical tape or put it in a tube or something?
By the way, I found the thread which does a really fine job of describing what you need to build this thing. This is how I built mine, and I also remember having the question about the "microfarad" vs the "millifarad".
After reading this thread, I checked my car. I can't find a filter. What are the repercussions of having a filter? My tach is working fine at the moment.
The tach filter is a radio noise filter to stop ignition noise being taken into the cab area where it can be picked up by the radio.
Lucky76's suggestion of using only the two parts is correct. It should be more than adequate.
