I have a 71 coupe using the original bellhousing, I decided to use a nodular 15lb GM flywheel 153 tooth, the original was 168. The original starter will not work, I've tried all day with the local parts stores but cannot get the right starter, I think it needs the straight across 4 hole style starter with a nose small enough to fit the bellhousing. I'm sure I'm not the 1st person to make this change of flywheels so lets hear from the masses. WHAT STARTER DO I NEED? Thanks

Yes, you need the straight pattern starter. Don't have a PN for you, but try a mid-late 70's Camaro 350 w/ manual. They came with the smaller 10.5" clutch & 153 tooth flywheel.

Would the bellhousing be the same as my 71? My wife said I out-tricked myself again, so we have to prove her incorrect.

If you change the large flywheel to the smaller one (153 tooth), you'll need to also replace the starter, bellhousing (you need the "403" bellhousing), flywheel cover, starter bracket, clutch, and disk. The starter has two mounting bolts, not four, and yes, they're in line, not off-set as your original starter was.

Return your new flywheel for the 168 tooth 14 incher. They're made in lightweight versions and of course, the larger clutch set-up has more surface area for holding more power.

Go to a good performance or race shop and grab an aftermarket gear reduction starter,a no name Tilton knock off should be about a hundred bucks.I think mine was a pro-form? #9000XPW,however that may be just the shop's part number.

If I go with a mini type, what does the points wire connect to?

ost mini's have 3-lug solenoid cap ... you need 4-lug for use w/ points ignition. Take the mini to a local starter-alternator repair shop & have them swap the solenoid cap.

Star Performance... www.starperf.com 1-800-625-9454 has 153T mini (GM style) straight pattern ... with 2 new monting bolts ... P/N GM153N ... $95

After searching a few other related threads I see that the "cold start" wire is not needed since I'm using a pertronix ignition, it looks like a 94-95 f-body lt-1 starter may work I will have 1 to try later today. I really wanted to use the old style starter.

I went to the same flywheel on my 75 when I swapped in the BBC. I did not change the bell housing. I used the GM mini starter (SUMMIT p/n - NAL-12361146 ) which has bolt patterns for the 153 or 168 tooth. Of note, I had to notch the alum mounting block to clear the oil pan flange.
