Default Tom another Radiator question.

I just ordered a DeWitts radiator. Should I leave the stock fan. Replace it with a puller fan, which I have on hand, or use both fans. My 73 gets hot in idle trafic. Fine on the highway. Changed the thermostat to a 160. Also replaced all foam around the radiator. Hope the new DeWitts fixes my problem. Just not sure what to do about the fan. Thanks.

If this helps I'm running one of Toms fans with my BB along with a Flex #210 electric fan n a 160 stat....It's only been a few months with my rebuild but my temps never hit over 180-190....when she's cool out even lower....Good luck.......................Jerrylee///

If you don't need a new shroud, then I'd just put it back together. Odds are you added enough extra cooling that you wouldn't need to do anything else

Once you get the DeWitt installed, don't forget to switch back to a 180F thermostat. Engine wear is minimal at about 190F. You'll get a lot more wear when cooling kicks in down at 160F, and especially if the engine stays that cool.

Thermostats with even higher temperatures, e.g. 200F (fully open at 220F), increase your engine's efficiency, which tends to be more efficient at hotter temperatures.

Changing the thermostat to 160F will not prevent overheating, it will just delay it for a few minutes, cause more engine wear, and decrease engine efficiency.

180-190 is fine, but don't let it get much cooler for very long. I try to shoot for around 190-200F or hotter when I'm using a lot of pedal. A 180F thermostat (which is fully open at 200F), and a very powerful cooling system (like DeWitts), should keep the temperature in a tight range at the right temperature.

I live here in Miami and drive my vette almost as a daily driver....I can tell you from personal experience that after switching to a Dewitt's radiator my car runs too cool with a 180* thermostat. I am switching to a 195* this weekend. I have run the car in the very very hot Miami August weather and the temps never rise when sitting in some serious traffic. In fact...I need to switch to a 195* thermostat to get some more heat into my car!!! Right now I practically have no heat all due to DeWitts cooling the car down too good. Who would have thought...a year ago I was complaining about too much heat both inside the cabin and under the hood and now I don't have enough for either all due to DeWitts
