Default 1970 Tire Sizes

I just got my 1970 Corvette running again after 15 yrs in the garage. It has original 1973 tires on it and they badly need replacing. Good tread depth but hard as a rock.

It seems that BFG Radial T/As are the tire of choice for this vintage if you want to stay with the 15 inch wheels (which I do).

Here is the issue. The car had FR60-15s front and rear. They were probably a little too small when I installed way back when. I want to go up in size with new tires. Did some trial fitting and it would seem that 245-60-15's fit the front and 255-60-15s will fit the rear. All my fender wells are stock and I do NOT want to trim/cut them.

Will these tire sizes work? What has been your experience?

Thanks for the input.

Bob

I don't think you can get the 245's any more.
I put 235-60-15 and 255-60-15 on a 77 last summer with no problems with 8" stock alloys. Look and run great.

Here's alink for T/a tires sizes.

I've got 245/60s on all four. I like their wide tread and how they fill the wheel well. I've run both 225/70s and 235/60s. The 225/70s are very close to stock and look good. I think that 235/60s are too small and don't look as good as the others but do work. I'd stay away from the 255/60s, especially in the front. Some people run them but there is always the chance of rubbing.

I clicked on the link and the t/a's were shown as back ordered while the other brands were shown as in stock. That's what happened to me.
I actually ordered 245's last summer and cancelled because they couldn't deliver. Did that at 2 different places and that's why I ended up with the 235's on the front. Later someone said they weren't making the 245's any more.
I originally wanted the 245 on the front and 255 on the rears.

I'm running 235/70/15 all the way around on my '70 which are a little narrower than what you are running. If you are sticking with the BFG's, Costco has great pricing on them.

In looking at both the Tire Rack and Jegs, the 245-60-15 size was listed as back ordered on both sites.

I am going to call to make sure that the size is still available.

The 255-60-15s are what the 78-80 cars have frt and rr. The factory modified the front fender wells to gain clearance when turning to full lock.

The 255s clear on the rear without any problems.

I know there are some other brands in those sizes but like the BFG T/As.

Thanks for the input.
