Default Oil Temp Probe location

Guys, I have a 1/8" NPT oil temp probe that I need to install for one of my new gauges. There are no 1/8" npt openings on my block. I was thinking I could use a reducer and install it in the plug hole just above the oil filter... Do you know the size of this opening 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"? Also, is there a different location you would suggest?

Thanks
Mike

On the 81, the optional oil temp sensor goes into the block right above the oil filter. The oil pressure sensor then re-locates to the rear top, with a 90degree fitting to give it the necessary clearance.

There should be another, at the tip of the back of the block, just on the webbing where the bell house bolts to the block.

Real chevy race cars w/ wet sump & oil temp have ot sender in race oil pan ... those are much bigger than 1/8" NPT.

1) I always thought race cars had a dry sump.

2)(My favorite) What does the size of the probe have to do with accuracy?

I wasn't trying to be humorous ... simply informative.
1. wrong ... check a canton or moroso or champ or cv wet sump pan.
2. the standard is a large OD probe ... many are actually metric thread. I doubt probe size matters except for standardization & compatibility.

I installed a reducer this weekend for my 1/8" oil sending unit. If I remember correctly it was 1/2". I installed it above the oil filter. My is an 80 also!

There are many series where rules prohibit dry sump ... primarily because of costs ... those series might also prohibit titanium rods for same reason. There are plenty of name-brand wet sump pans that have excellent oil control via well-designed windage trays/screens/runners ... they're so good the asians are even knocking them off too.

BTW ... race dry sump systems have the ot probe in the oil TANK ... not block.

Accurate? Pan for return temp. and above oil filter for supply. IE, oil cooler. Both places would give you temp drop from a cooler. The probe will not fit in the cavity on top of the block web.

well, I cannot get the plug out of the hole above the filter, its painted closed. So I'm not going to bother with that location now.

If I choose to put it in the pan can anyone think on a way to mount it in the existing oil pan drain hole. I was thinking I could mount the 1/8" npt sensor in there somehow.

My other option is welding a new bung in the pan.
