Pay close attention to the height of the intake manifold you choose. You don't have much clearance between your air cleaner and hood.
I don't know what the air cleaner base is like on a '76, but I know my stock air cleaner wouldn't work on the Hollie that came with my GM 350 HO crate engine.
A double row timing set will fit under your stock cover with no problems. You didn't give all the specs for your cam, but whatever thay are, the stock manifolds are going to choke it to death (IMHO). I had a 350 years ago that I used the GM 3927140 cam. With a 4sp, good headers, etc. It was advertised as the first design Z-28 "off-road". Pain in the behind around town- not much low end torque. I tried a 650 cfm Holley- it flat ran out of air at 6000 rpm. Ended up with a 750.

we are thinking of a comp cams 470 lift 224 duration cam. It will also use stock pistons. we checked the block, bore etc and they are all in great shape. Just trying to give it a little kick.
yes, your plan will work for " just give it a little kick". I believe you will be pleasently surprised with the differance..to bad you dont want headers, that kinda holds the whole setup back.

I agree but I like the stock look. I guess no one makes something stock looking that would work
You may want to consider 180cc heads, with the edelbrock performer manifold and 600-650 carb, or the 750 Q Jet as the better choice. Before you buy, you might want to read Lingenfelter's book on building the small block; or Chevy Hi Performance small block buildup. They both have great advise for cam heads manifold and carb seletions for max performance- depending on your intended use of the car.

I have an original L48 in my 1980 which we built...but didn't worry about the stock look this time. Here are some specs and the last dyno tune (372hp and 427tq at rear wheels)
L48 stroked 383
SRP forged flat tops
Forged crank and rods
Edelbrock RPM 64cc heads (ported and polished)
Edelbrock RPM air-gap intake
Demon 750 with manual secondaries
Comp Extreme Energy 274 roller cam
Hooker Comp headers
Summit drop base cleaner with filter top
