Default No Electricity!!!

Okay, so I was checking my timing and I shorted something out. There was a pop at the back of the engine from the passenger side and then a small cloud of smoke and then the car died. Now I have no power to ANYTHING. When I put the key in, none of the gauges light up, the radio won't turn on, I have no voltage from the hot to ground on the alternator, NOTHING. Suffice to say when I turn the key absolutely nothing happens. Is there something obvious that I should check here? If I blew the alternator would it kill the power to the stereo and the gauges and everything else? Are there some main fuses somewhere like in newer cars that might have fried? I looked in the area where the smoke came from and all that is back there are the spark plug wires. I should also say that I DO have 12v across the battery.

Your puff of smoke was the fusable links burning in half. Look at the starter. You will find 1,2 or3 burnt wires. You will need to splice in new ones. They come in various amperages.

Wow, good to know that it is nothing catastrophic. So the fusable links would take power away from the whole car? Is there a way to read on them what the amperage is?

They are color coded. See if any part is left. Probably red.

Yes, all the power in the car is distributed thru the fuse links

You might want to check what CAUSED the link to melt before you just replace it. The new link will melt just as fast as the original if the condition remains. With smoke emitted it seems like you had a pretty good short circuit there and I would check to see if the starter lead became grounded against something.

Yep. Find out what you shorted. I will guess you powered your light from the back of the alternator, and ground it to the case.

You've just found one of the advantages of not having any electronic gizmo boxes in these old cars. Very robust electrical.
