Default Fuel pump swap

Changing the fuel pump to an aftermarket. There are two lines running from the gas tank to the fuel pump, one i know is the feed and the second one has been called an overflow line and vapor return line in the books i have read. The aftermarket fuel pump does not have a nipple to attach the line to, so how important is that line and what is its true purpose?
Can i remove it completely and plug it at the gas tank with no consequecs? Or, should i have it run to another tank or canister for safety reasons? Help!!!!!

I just cut and plugged the return line on my '80. I didn't know about the CF back then, so I didn't have anybody to ask. It will be interesting to see what the CF veterans have to say.

I don't know how a '72 and '80 fuel lines differ, but I can take a picture of my plugged fuel line later if you want.

In my old 396 engine there is no return line...somebody has plugged it away from use...but I have had no problems with that...

The Oem Qjets don't like a lot of fuel pressure, Holly's can generally stand a little more, but not a lot. This return helped keep the pressure down while also helping with vapor lock.

I had the same situation and just last week made a tee in the fuel line before the carb to accomodate the return line and lessen pressure. I think I put an .050 oriface in it.

I've run cars without too, so your choice. I feel much better with it.

Unless your running dual quads, you probably don't need a fancy fuel pump, a replacement without the marketing hype is just fine.
