Friday night I was out for a run and after a couple hard runs , shifting at about 6500 I noticed that my power steering was not working. Before long the temp gauge pegged 250 degrees! I limped home, about 1 mile. When the power steering belt came off it took the belt with the alternator and water pump with it!! I lost most of the coolent from the radiator, and the engine smelled bad, real hot. After it cooled down, I put about 2 gallons of water back in it, and started it up. Its running like crap, won't idle, just dies and won't rev either. Also, when I was going home after the belts came off it was blowing white smoke out the rear, could it be head gaskets? Need some advice on what to do next, I want to rebuild the engine for sure if it is ok. Thanks for the help. :mad
Doesn't look good.
Check your oil, probably looks like a milkshake. Could be blown head gasket as well as cracked head or block. Have seen someone drain & replace oil & water did not get into again.
To me it sounds like you broke a fan belt that caused you power steering and water pump to quit. Your alternator would no longer be charging the battery, so the ignition would be weak. This would happen pretty quickly at night with the added load of head lights. If you are now losing water out the tail pipe it may be that you blew the head gasket due to the very high temp that resulted from the water pump no longer pumping.
Stuff that goes wrong sure can mount up quickly! I really feel sorry for you if it turns out to be expensive and a major hassle. The LT-1 is one great motor!
i have driven with a stuck thermo and a bad waterpump before...
i feel like a moron saying this but i have limped home with really really high temp (okay im an idiot.... :conehead ) im talking red zone temps here....
It's that "last mile" that killed you. I carry a cell phone and a AAA plus card. I had an oil press gauge go to 0 in the middle of San Francisco in my BOSS 302, so shut it off, coasted to a stop and called for a ride on a flatbed. It turned out to be a sender, but better safe than broke! Pull it and check it over. At least heads and maybe cooked slugs (pistons). May the car gods be with you on this one!
