Default Bbc ???????/ Heads

I was advised in the c5 section to post this here and I might get some answers, BTW the casting numbers are 346246.
I need some help with info on BBC heads, we are going to start building our fist BB and I'm starting with a 454 that came out of a 83' one ton pick up. I'm hearing a lot about differant heads, I ran the casting numbers and the info says that they are from 75-87 and open chamber 113 cc. I had another guy tell me that these are called peanut port heads and worthless for what I'm wanting to do.

I'm building this motor for an 89 2wd pick up and would like good driveability and about 500 crank hp, I will also be putting a 100 shot on it.

Any info or advice is greatly appreciated guys, I don't know if this is the best place to ask these questions but the forum has always come thru in the past.

Thanks again in advance,
Bob

Here's a couple posts on them. Sounds like they are not suited for making HP.

There are lots of options when it comes to Big Block heads, rec port, oval port, after market. There are a few very good oval port castings. 336781, 353049, These are open chamber and good flowing stock heads. Rec port heads will have bigger flow numbers but low end torque may suffer a bit, just depends on what you are looking for from you engine. I like the rec port heads, 6272990 for big pull in the upper rpm range. Here is a link with some info http://www.roadsters.com/bbc/#bore

The standard truck heads are often referred to as "peanut ports" and not really suitable for a HP engine build. Thats what was on my 454 when I bought my BB.

Here's what I used instead:

12363391, GM Performance signature Series aluminum heads with 2.25I valves, 290cc intake runner. Even though these are "ovals," you can see they're more rectangular than oval.

The GM heads jughead has are made by Edelbrock for the 502. Edelbrock also sells these under their own name as the Performer heads. The performers are identical to the GM except they come with 2.19 intake valves which is a better match for a 454. Not saying 2.25 is horrible in a 454, but unless it's a really hopped up 454, the 2.19's tend to work better.
