Starter problem

I just changed the starter in my 1980 L48 corvette. Everything went well, in and out with no problems.Hooked the battery back up and turned the car over and everything sounded good.Just one little problem.The starter will not stop even when i turn the key off.I tried it a few times and if i went back and forth with the key i got it to stop.The last time i tried the starter just kept going till it killed the battery.i am thinking i got a bad starter.Does this sound right.Any help would be great Thankx Richard

Sounds like you need a starter shim,..try an .020",..should fix you up. You don't have enough clearance between the ring gear and the starter gear and it's getting stuck.

It's possible the battery cable is touching the "start" terminal too. Don't ask how I know about that one! :o
