Default Stock heater core shutoff

I am going through the whole cooling system and I have noticed that there is a stock heater core shutoff that appears to be vaccum operated. I have two questions about it.

1. is the stock one worth replacing? or change it with a manual valve?
2. Where does the vaccum line connect to ?

Im not a car expert but I am learning alot along the way. I would like to replace it with the stock replacement.

Only thing I can say is when they work they work. Mine was not working and I found the vacuum line was clogged and cracked. I trimmed the cracked and clogged part out, and it started getting vacuum (seems someone along the past 25 years stuck a toothpick or something in the line). When reattached, the vacuum operated valve worked fine and I noticed a considerable difference inside the car. Like night and day.

The vacuum is attached to the temprature control wheel on the console. When at hot, vacuum is shut off, when set on cold, vacuum is applied.

If the thing is not working, you're probably better off adding a manual one than trying to fish a new vacuum line through the console, up under the dash, through the fire wall and down the inner fender side to the valve. What a pain when a simple splice, and insert operation is all that would really be needed.

Hope this helps.
Jeff

My wife felt cold this weekend while driving around in the vette with the tops off. I switched to heat, and it felt good to know that the shut-off valve opens upon command.

I believe most on the CF have switched to manual. :smash:

Go ahead & replace w/ stock one. Last I checked mine was still working.
Many guys are replacing w/ manual only because it was not there.

The stock heater valve is a normally open device if yours is like my 79 which closes when you apply a vacuum to it .You can test it once it is removed from the car by,sucking on the vacuum line & then crimping the pipe with a pair of pliers to mantain the vacuum, now you should not be able to blow through the valve,if you can then the valve is leaking by & should be replaced.

Well, the vaccum line that was once on the shutoff valve is no longer there. I think I would agree with above comment that if its not there , its easier to replace with a manual shutoff (rather then fish it through the firewall). I really appricate all the help with this ! its a simple question but there are a few different ways to attack it.

Mine works very well, even after 22 years. It is very convenient to have heater control from the console. And routing that white line is not really that difficult.
