Tell me what you think: Replacing the flywheel and sealing up the transmission on my auto '69. I've got a GM mini-starter on it - any recommendations on a flywheel for that combination? Any upgrades you'd recommend while this is pulled out while keeping it somewhat "correct?"
What trany do you have? You said flywheel but if it is an auto, I think you mean flex plate. TCI sells good flex plates. If you have an auto have you considered a shift improvement kit from Transgo? I installed one in my Turbo 400 and it was one of the best upgrades I ever did.
Thanks KJL. Your post and a friend of mine got me thinking. I'm going to go with a TCI flexplate. For the Transgo, did you just go with the SK350 or is there more performance oriented one? Going to go ahead and do a rebuild on it, so is there a recommendation on the torque converter - stay with standard or upgrade it?
Call the folks at Transgo for a recomendation. They are very helpful. The kit I used involved drilling larger holes in the valve body plate, new steel *****, a valve and some springs were also changed. I got quicker and firmer shifts (not harsh). It was no longer a slush box. I forget the kit number but I may still have the box. I will look tonight. As far as TC, that depends and your current or future engine mods and rear gear. Call the folks at TCI. Looking for stall recommendations here on the forum will just leave you confused because there are many bigger is better active members that are running 3500 stall converters on mild street engines and claim they love it. The TCI folks will want to know your engine specs, rear gear ratio, tire diameter, vehicle weight and what you want to do with the car.
