I came across a Flex-A-Lite piece last night that stated that electric fans should not be used with radiators with more than three cores due to the resistance to air flow. Anyone using elec fans with four core big block radiators?
It doesn't surprise me to hear that Flex-a-lite would say that. Their fan motors are weak and any obstruction in front of them has a significant negative effect on their flow rating. Flex-a-lite and Perma-cool rates their fans in free-air, installing them behind a radiator reduces their effective flow significantly. Compare one of their fans vs. a Spal fan of the same ratings, and you'll know what I mean. It's like comparing a tweeter to a subwoofer, in terms of the size and weight of the motors/magnets.
I tried to run Flex-a-lite's highest rated fan behind a BeCool radiator (rated for 600ci and 1000hp) when I installed a 383 several years ago. It didn't keep it cool at all. I switched over to a Spal set up, with was actually rated elss than the Flex-a-lite, and I've never had problems again, even with my current SBC427.
I am using four davies craig thermatic fans on my hot rodded big block (two sucking two blowing) and have had no problems with overheating or with the fans.....
I have put the thermatic switch in the header tank..... not using a fan on the motor.
its the ones from ecklers... (they sell em cheaper in summit i think and its the same @$@!! kit!!) okay i got ripped a little hehehehe... they are dual fans and it seems its a generic kit with all kindsa stuff in it. i mounted mine through the radiator fins,,, too lazy to fab brakets.. then just connected up a temp sensor in the intake manifold and i was all set.
i have AC but i havent fixed it yet cuase im poor and dont even have money for food.
