Hey everyone!! I need some advice.
The 82 vette has started to do strange things lately. When I turn off the engine, the drivers headlight pops up. Restart the engine, it goes back down and stays down the second time engine is turned off. Also, just recently, the engine sometimes cuts out unexpectedl(especially when engine is cold or during hot weather). At first I thought the engine stalls were plugged injectors, but now I'm beginning to wonder if its a bad vacuum hose somewhere causing both problems. What do you think?
Poor vacuum will cause the headlights to pop up like that, must be a very big leak or the check vale is not working for the vacuum tank not to be able to hold a reserve of vacuum
it seems like a lot of 82's are having headlight problems all of a sudden. Maybe it is their turn to rebuild their systems. :yesnod: Must be a 20 year thing...
Hose kits as a rule are your best bet, just do one at a time ,here"s a great web site for your vacuum woes...www.members.home.net/awsvette/vacuum#est Also you need to get yourself a vacuum hand pump/brake bleeder, just do one componant at a time as you test and you"ll be OK
Mine were doing that one time and it turned out I had a vacuum line that was getting pinched up under the dash. It was after I had had my dash out and when I re-installed it I had one line from the override switch routed around the headlight switch and it wasn't causing any trouble until I tightened up all the screws. Didn't take much I guess. Good luck.
I would say the check valve is your headlight problem.....its located on top of the intake manifold....a little round disk about the size of a quarter. I believe it has on hose nipple on one side and two on the other...not sure...going from memory.

alright guys and gals...I have read the other vacuum sites for info and they are very helpful. It seems most likely that I may have a leaking check valve. The question that is rolling around in my brain is this. If the check valve is leaking, why does only the drivers side headlamp pop up when the engine is turned off? Oh by the way, I assume its normal to have only the one manual override push/pull pin under the steering column?
It might just be a case that the one that opens has the best seal and the lest friction. And yes there is only one manual over ride switch.Just remember in dealing with cars of this age and the complexity of the system you more likly have alot of little leaks that really add up to alot together than one big major one. Then again you cannot find them until you get vacuum to the tank to find them
