anyone ever rent one? if so how much was it. I get my car back from the shop next week, and I'm gunna go race at lebanon valley dragway on the 19th of october and i was wondering how much a trailer would run me, cuz no one that i know of would trailer me up.
I have used both the "car hauler" (four wheels off) and the "car dolly" (two wheels off). They work fine, but the lights are usually messed up. Make sure you tell them in advance to verify that the lights are working. They tend to let the renter deal with it... I had to fix them myself. As independent dealers, they typically are too lazy to fix the lights, and wait until you get here to pick up the trailer and then say... "Oh, I'm not sure if the lights work." The car hauler is very heavy, and with the car loaded, the tongue weight will be very high. Make sure your tow-vehicle is up for the task. Also, pull all of the straps ALL of the way out to check them BEFORE you drive away from the dealer. The previous customer may have torn them. Besides not working properly, you may also have to pay for them. ... Don't know price.... just call their 800 number.
I've used a transporter before (all 4 wheels off the road) with good results. I would recommend it over a two wheel dolly.
I think don't recall the exact cost but I believe it was contingent on the number of days used, not mileage. U-Haul may require that you tow it with THEIR vehicle.
The other vendors require that you tow their trailers with THEIR vehicle... Unless they have recently changed their policy, U-Haul is the only one that does not. That is the reason why I used U-Haul. FYI
I used one to move my car from Norman down to Plano. Worked great, don't remember price but it was cheap, used a 3/4 ton Dodge Ram turbo diesel to haul it (not mine, lord knows I'd roll something like that, the way I drive, a co-workers . Damn truck didn't even notice the extra 4,000 lbs
Used the full car transporter a few months ago to retrieve a
65 Mustang Conv. form the boondocks. It works verry well and feels solid.
I pulled it with a Mazda MPV 4 wheel drive and had no problem. Cost about $55-$60 in Virginia.
thanks for the info. and i would love to drive her to the track, but the only problem is, i live 90 minutes from LVD, and I'd say a good 125-150 miles away. imagine that tow bill home.
Had very bad luck with at two wheel dolly. First of all the rear U-joint on the drive shaft is very hard to get to. ( have and 80 ) You don't want to mees up the tranny by towing with the driveshaft engaged.
You can't disconnect the driveshafts from the rear wheels because then you don't have enough support to hold the car up on the rear wheels.
Tell them you are going to haul a light weight Toyota or a Nissan, unless you have a C-2500 or F-250 truck. They'll tell you that a F-150 or C-1500 isn't enough truck to haul their trailer and a Corvette (which is horse-poopiee) I hauled my 'vette from Colorado Springs to South Texas on a trailer twice as big as one of their trailers, with my C-1500. No problems at all, drove 70 most of the way. The only slow down was at Raton Pass in New Mexico, I had to slow to about 50.
the lady behind the counter said i can get away with a 4x4 S10 or blazer. i checked it out and its 50 bucks +8 dollar insurance, and 100 dollar deposit
I pulled my GTO (about 700 lb.s heavier than my Vette) on their 4 wheel trailer with my 1/2 ton Ram (360)...No problems. Cost was $50/ day and the lights were jacked up and had to be fixed before I left.
Mine was a one way rental (Max 4 days) for $190 also on top of the $190 there was a $50 deposit which of course was refunded when the auto transport was returned.
I hauled a 59 vette from San Antonio TX to Tulsa Ok using a Dodge 1500.
The U-haul center would not rent to me because I had no bed cover...
an independent rented to me with no trouble.
Be sure to use the safety chains - They saved me even though I stopped every 100 miles to check on the wheel straps. The strap on the front right came loose in the last 100 miles of the trip. (Whew!!!!)
I just rented one from Ryder this morning. They required me to rent a 15' truck with the 4 wheel full auto trailer. The truck was $30 plus 59 cents a mile, the trailer was $35. I took all of the insurance, 20 +15= $35 and it was well worth it. It really gives you peace of mind. I was 10 miles from returning it pulling out of a toll booth and I clipped the right side mirror on a poll. It broke, but it was covered 100%.
This was the second time I ever drove something with a trailer. The only difficulty I had was trying to turn the whole thing 180 degrees without it jack knifing. Aside from that it was fine. I cruised at 65-70 MPH all over the Bay Area today with and without my '69 on the back.
