Put a voltmeter on and it drops to 7.5V when I crank it. Sounds like the battery, but AAA had a guy out here with one of the small jump-kits and it didn't help. He also asked me to pop the hood so he could get to the battery (), but does that sound like a bigger problem? I'm going to get a new battery and start from there, what's everyone think?
A good 12v battery should not drop below 9.5 volts (closed cell voltage) while cranking. If it does, the battery has lost capacity.
If you put a volt meter on the battery and take a volt reading before cranking. A good battery should be between 12.5-12.3 volts. Once the engine starts, take the voltage reading again at the battery. You should see 13.8-14.2. This tells you that the alternator is putting out properly.
Give that a try. I'll predict that the battery needs replacing.
Well, If you changed the starter, and your going to change the battery, all that is left is the cables. So, change the cables too, and the whole system is sound.
Success!! Replaced battery and it cranked right up, no problems at all. I'm supposing that AAA guy didn't do it right, and that's why the jump didn't work. Oh well, at least it's running now.
