I was wondering what would be most cost effective. buy the correct distributor? or get a new tach for a later model. i dont know if later model would fit though. any ideas appreciated
Finding a tachdrive distributor shouldn't be too hard, but there are a couple of things to consider. If you have a modern engine with a roller camshaft then you'll need the right gear on the tach shaft. The wrong type of gear will get chewed up in short order with a roller cam.
If that isn't a worry then you can have a tachdrive distributor converted to HEI. http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ will convert a tachdrive tach to HEI or MSD trigger for under $200.00.
You could find a tach from a 75 or 76 and carefully remove the face plate from your tach and install it on the electronic tach. I think Zwede did this on his car.
Convert it over to elecronic. I am having mine done right now for $135. Taking my old face and putting in the electronic guts. A forum member here is doing it for me.
I spent a fortune trying to put back in a mechanichal tach on my 1974. When I bought the car it had a regular gm hei installed and no tach working as 1974 was the last year for mechanichal tach. I slowly bought all the pieces on ebay to put it back. Hooked it all up and got it running, and three days later the tach itself [head unit in car] locks up and tears the gears out of the distributor. I went and bought an accel hei dist and a 1975 electrical head unit and never looked back.
thanks, so its not too expensive than? thats good. i just happened to see resto models from corvette america for 400+......... all suggestions appreciated.
I went over to the C-3 Parts forum and saw the "sticky thread" Group Purchase offer from new vendor, Speed City. While I'd debate Phoenix as speed city, their prices seem to be very reasonable. We should give them a big Corvette Forum Welcome by purchasing a couple dozen of these distributors (so that mine will be that much cheaper).
