Default Installing sunvisors, how do you compress that spring??

What tricks / tools have you guys used to compress the spring enough to install the "o" clip on the sunvisor rod? This is referring to the chromed corner moulding pieces that the rod comes through at the bottom and the spring / clip installs from the top. My car is a 82 model.

I'm having trouble getting the spring down far enough for the clip to bite in to

Thats a biotch isn't it.
I had a buddy hold up on the rod while I placed a deep socket on the retainer and tapped it with a mallet. This is probably the Bubba method but it worked.
