I think there are 2 places on the frame where the VIN is stamped. I think there is one on the drivers side, on top, about midway from front to back. The other is also on the drivers side, but I cannot remember where the location is. I was just reading an article in an olde corvette fever mag. about the frame and VIN locations. It also mentioned how you might read the VIN with the body on.
I noticed my VIN the other day, since I am in the middle of a frame off rebuild and the body is not on the car currently.
Part of the VIN is stamped on the top of the rail, driver's side in front of the #4 body mount. It's almost impossible to see this number with the body on but I have heard accounts of folks getting to it with flashlights and mirrors. If you want to go after it, you will need to clean off the road gunk in the area in front of the mount. The actual position of the number varied and depended upon who was stamping blocks and frames the day your car was assembled.
Good luck.
On my '70, the VIN is stamped into the side of the frame on the passenger side, just rear of the front wheel, between wheel and where the frame disappears behind the wheel well / under the eggcrate insert. Easy to see when wheel is off; may need to remove paint / coating from frame.
Thanks guys, I am trying to revive from a salvage title and the DMV would not accept just the vin tag on the W/S pillar post, they said they need so see two different locations, not the engine or Trans either. :flag
