I want to check the grease/lube in the steering box. It is the original unit and works OK, but who knows how long its been since checked. Can I just take the top off to check it, or will it all come apart if I do? [I've worked on a lot of car items...just not a steering box.] Thx.
The book calls for removing 2 of the cover bolts and adding grease in one until it comes out the other. I never liked this method and recommend removing the box to lube and adjust. Removing the cover will throw off your lash setting and the best way to adjust it is use a dial 0-30 in/lb torque wrench.
The lash is probably about 5 in/lbs total now and I expect the lash screw has about .008" play in it. If you're going to go this far I would correct these areas at a minimum. I usually rebuild them at this point.
You need to leave room for expansion when adding grease as well or it will pop a seal.
If you need any help let me know and I'll go over in more detail.
Undo one of the cover bolts and pump some grease in there. If your not looking to rebuild it, I would turn the box as you put the grease in but don't over do it. Couple of pumps and use a high temp grease.
