Default Leaky Radiator

My radiator is leaking. It seems like it is on the upper left part of the radiator. My car has almost 39,000 miles on it, but it was parked for 18 years with the original coolant in it.

I can either take it to the local radiator repair shop and have them fix it or I can buy a new one (not a bee cool, etc, just an oem-style raidator).

What should I do? I know my radiator shop does good work. They have fixed the radiator on my tractor before.

IF you have a good local radiator shop, then get it recored!

BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE A GOOD ONE!!

i got my 4 core recored a number of years ago and i never had another problem with it again!

cost: ~$130 bux!

quite a deal.

Re-core, that way it's still the origional radiator!

It's like the family axe, it's had 5 new handles and three new heads but it still the family axe.

Take your original radiator to your radiator shop. Have them leak test it to determine where the leak is, then follow their advice on the fix. The leak may be something easy to fix in a tank, or more involved. The radiator may not need to be recored.

While it's in the shop, have your radiator tanked to clean out the old deposits. Most shops do this as a matter of course, but mention it to them. If they are as good as you say, they will know whether your radiator is aluminum or copper. Just the same, if they don't mention it, you might want to bring up the subject.

If the core of the original radiator is in good shape I always prefer to repair it instead of repalce.

okay, one of the tubes was leaking right??

me being the @#@! cheap bastard i am decide to get em to pull the tube and solder up the header right??

WRONG!

2 weeks later i had to pull the radiator again.

this time i went for a full recore.

dont screw around with your radiator. it might choose to go bad at the most inopportune time, and itll try and take your head gaskets with it.

Thanks, guys. I am going to make this a winter project... going to pull the radiator and take it to the shop and do what they tell me to. Hopefully they can fix it. I like the family axe analogy... seems to fit in quite well here.
