Default Wacky Speedometer

My 82's speedometer needle has been driving me crazy. It used to bounce a wee bit so I lubed the speedo end that goes to the transducer. That cured it for awhile but now it's even worse. Two days ago the needle started bouncing as much as 20mph up & down, sometimes less. It becomes steady once I reach 75mph on the freeway. I removed the cables (upper & lower) inside their sheaths and lubed them this weekend and it's still bouncing. What else should I check?

It's probably the speedometer itself. It may need to be serviced.

No I haven't. Maybe I should since my cruise control doesn't work either.

i have seen this happen before, the speedometer cable is twisting. it's eventually going to break. i would replace the cable from the transducer to the speedometer.

I would. When I had mine done, my needle bounce went away.

Good to know. I guess I'll change the transducer. Might as well kill two birds with one stone. Been wanting to get my cruise control working again anyway.

By the way, I noticed you're from Anaheim. I used to live there from '83-'98. Class of '88 Katella High. I miss So Cal.

Default Probably it's the Transducer

My 78 speedo did the same thing. It was the transducer. I don't need cruise so I took the tranducer apart, cleaned it and removed it's guts. Speedo works fine now.

If you want to try and fix yours at home go to http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~eaztl1/...trol_recon.htm.

I used to live in The City of Orange from 78 to 84, still have family there.

Thanks for the link! Very informative. I'll try fixing it myself this weekend.
