I tried and tried to use the coat hanger pry tool that Jim Shea recommends for extracting a broken turn signal arm... so I'm pretty much left with opening it up and doing it the hard way. As long as I'm in there (oh boy... here we go...) what else should I be replacing?
77/350 - I had to get into my column to check out the windshield washer switch. PA State inspection. Cant live with it - cant live without it. The blinkers and washer switch are in the same switch for mine.
Anyway I used my Shop & Haynes manuals and a blowup of the components from one of the parts catalogs so see where every thing went back together and in what sequence. Broke the actuator trying to put it back in. Key switch was easy out/easy in. Bottom line is I dont think there is any way to know what may need replacing until you get it apart and try to put it back together. Parts usually arrive in a couple of days where I'm located. It was easier for me to remove the drivers seat so I could squeeze my self under the dash to get to the harness connections.
If I pay an arm and a leg I can get to Vette parts in a few days... am hoping to hear what people most likely find broken or worn when they get inside.
I have a feeling that not many (judging from the response) have been there and done that....
I do have the interior out (seats, carpet, etc.) and that makes life easier. I'd still like to find the twit who decided the fuse box should be installed that far up the bulkhead under the dash.
I am going to start rebuilding the steering column on my '80 in a couple of weeks because of turn signal problems. The stalk keeps busting out.
I've got all Shea's document and a shop manual. It's not going to be easy, so I don't want to go in there again. I just went ahead and bought everything I could find: switch, pivot, cam, etc.
Another way to extract the broken turn signal lever stub from the dimmer pivot would be as follows. Take a 1/16 inch diameter drill bit and carefully drill a hole about 3/8 inch deep into the stub. Use a sheet rock screw or any type of self tapping screw and drive it into the stub until it is tight. Grab the screw head and pull it straight out.
