Yep, truck. Just curious . Came with a cast iron nose. Dealer mechanic told me iron with the big block, because in a backfire the alum nose snaps off with a BB. Just curious when they changed, and the logic behind it.

Probably 1970 with the introduction of the 454. However, both the 350 and 454 starters are interchangeable. The 454 does have HD fields and is a good choice for SB`s too. Your 88 truck would have had a metric starter on it and it would not have been correct with the cast iron starter. The mounting bolt holes through the aluminum nose are of a metric size, slightly different than before the 1977 models and yet looks identical except for a shorter switch.
PS, there is no such thing as 'heat soak'
just get a good starter!
Correct, except one may want the large case high torque HD starter. Thats what I use on the 454`s. The OEM stuff is light years ahead of those afermarket high dollar pieces of miniture junk.

That's what I was thinking, and I will probably buy a GM HD starter when the time comes.

I DO believe you guys. I just don't believe GM munchkins changed it in the middle of the night. I am the only one who ever touched that truck. I only farm out body and paint, and machine work.

My original starter never did this but when I had to replace it the new one did. For about two years. Then it stopped. Now it's fine when hot. Figure that one out!!
