what would be the best headers and exhaust to fit to my 78 c3 L48.i live in the uk so the cat is not an issue, many thanks guys.i want it to sound like a proper v8 should
I would go with PYPES. They are a sponsor on this board and have a NICE 2.5" mandrel system, X pipe and race mufflers for $487 USD. Thats stainless steel also. Headers, either hooker super comps if you have a big motor or Hedman Elite if you are running a 350 or mild 383.
I have Hooker Super Comps on my 350 and they work great. The exhaust system is an exhaust shop custom fabbed one, with Flowmaster 50 series mufflers and I love the sound of it.

if you want, i can give you for a fraction of its price my former super comp hooker header side mount with its stock long side tubes (with custom and stock glasspack) and short open custom lightweight mufflers
if you live in uk transport will also be pretty cheap...
If you have a relatively stock engine, the tri-Y design header will give you a seat-of-the-pants torque boost up to approx 5,000-5,500 rpm. After that you are better off with the 4 tube equal length design. STAN'S HEADERS in Washington State makes the best tri-Y design. Search Stan's on the forum for testimonials.

I checked their website and it says that they're not available until April. If this true?

That might be true, I just saw Spring 07. I emailed them about building me a 3" mandrel, x pipe with their race mufflers and they said they didn't think 3" would fit well without rubbing on everything.
I just wonder how much it hurts power going from 3" mandrel to 2.5" mandrel on a 500hp motor.

AJ, the 2.5" pipe barely fits through the crossmember. 3" will be a rattle nightmare. The tradeoff is performance but 2.5" mandrel bent is probably 50% more flow than 3" non mandrel bent. So you are still looking at the best flowing system available for your vehicle. Is your car 500hp at the wheels? If yes, then 3" mandrel in theory will get you 10-15 extra hp, but the 2.5" mandrel is going to gain you upwards of 50hp over a custom bent non mandrel bent system. so it's not like you're choking the motor.
