Default SMC Panels

Confused!!

I've read many articles stating that SMC (Sheet Molded Fiberglass) started in the mid 70's to 82 with the return of fuel injection, (throttle-body). Does anyone know the correct year this change-over occured from FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic)??

not sure of the year the change was made, but you should have SMC panels.they are smooth on the back side, whereas the other type were rough.

Gary ,
Are you referring to hand-laid glass (rough in the back of panel) as opossed to molded glass panels (smooth in the back of the panel). I think thats just the actuall manufacturing process. FRP & SMC are different chemicall make ups...If that makes any sence!! I think the "mold release" agent is built right into the SMC panels.

SMC was phased in. If memory serves, the rear fenders on '71s are SMC while the remaining panels are press molded. Everything before that was press molded. My guess would be that it was 73 or 74, possibly later, before the entire body was SMC.
