I pulled the hold down clamp completely off to remove the distributor, but it's stuck. I can't turn it at all so I wouldn't even be able to adjust the timing. Anyone have any ideas?

Just keep at it. Get as good a hold on it as you can and just go at it. Try to wiggle it little bits at a time. I had a Dodge big block that didn't want to give up it's distributor either...and I worked at it for almost thirty minutes.
Have you tried it with the engine warmed up? I went through this once and got it out with the engine at operating temp. (Obviously do this with the engine off and wearing gloves). Good luck!
How about wrapping an oil filter strap wrench around it, can that hurt anything?
Sounds like a really bad idea to me, unless you plan on replacing it with a new one.
The idea about warming up the motor is a much better idea. You can also spray the point where it meets the intake wtih some wd-40 to help loosen up the gasket and all the years of oil crud that have built up.

The strap wrench will not damage the cap, If you are pulling the distributer out, just take the cap off and put the strap wrench around the aluminum housing.

Hey C3 4me, I just am wondering why the distributor is coming out? Have you got an engine problem? We had a 406 that stopped running, Motor was locked up, When we started pulling it apart, we had the same problem. We had to really work at getting it out and found the gear on it was stuck on the cam gear, the shaft was bent.
Strap wrench works good, but I don't know if he'll get enough room to turn it. My experience with those had turned out pretty bad in most of the cases I tried to use one.
Should have mentioned the cap was long gone. I definitely had a Homer Simpson DOH! moment though. I didn't know there was a squared off part on the shaft, needless to say, 1 inch open end and it's out, and now the intake is off. Only casualty was the thermostat housing where we lodged the breaker bar to pry the intake up. No biggie the guy helping me said he had a brand new one at home. Going from stock L-82 to an Edelbrock performer.

Sweet. What other goodies you have to bolt on? Changing the carb? Maybe a cam and lifter package?
