Default Vette 73 Blower Switch/Fan/Relay

Hi, I have had my vette (73) for a week and needless to say Iam a very happy man. Problem is the fan switch is all screwy. The speeds are all over the place. Off seems to be low, Hi is off and the two mid speeds are around the wrong way. I have checked the wiring on the switch as well as the resistor and the relay and they are as they should be. But the relay has a vacant terminal were there should be an orange wire feeding power from the horn relay. I intend to run a fused wire to this, but where do I find the horn relay?? And even when I do this I wouldn't think that would be the cause of the screwy fan settings? Being a new vette owner I just need some advice before I go messing around with it. Oh, the car has a/c if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance. Cheers Bluey

To start I bet you have Air Conditioning. The fan runs slow in the off position on most 73's with air. In the highest speed if it will not run their is an inline fuse in the area under the master cyclinder that I belive is burnt out. It may be a red wire at the horn relay changing to yellow after the fuse holder. I know the color changes but not sure on the colors. Let me know what you find.

The horn relay is mounted above the drivers side front tire, There is suppose to be a relay that snaps onto the AC evaperator that engages when you put it on high. On mine the PO let it fall off and the plug melted apart on the exhuast manifold. The other speeds are conroled by resisters mounted on a plate that fits inside on the top of the fan box against the firewall.

Thanks for the advice. It all makes sense now that I know the fan still runs on low in the off position. The wire with the fuse holder going to the horn relay had been removed, so I replaced it and it now works on the hi setting. I guess the previous owner removed it so he could shut the blower fan off by using the hi setting. Thanks again for your help.

there is no ''off''setting, ralph nader made it a law so there is always air flow in the cockpit

That's an interesting point to remember for one of the trivia posts.

Also a good wat to remember that there is no "off" position.
