I have recently purchased a 1979 L48 with A/C with a standard Federal type engine. The previous owner purchased a rebuilt Rochester Carburetor Model Number 17057211-(Chev 77 High Perf A/C & Non A/C Vette, according to Lars paper Q-Jet Tuning Paper.pdf), which is currently on the auto. From Lars paper it appears that the Rochester Model No. 17059203-(Chev 79 Fed Vette A/C & non 4-speed) was the correct carb, and not the one he purchased. Does this make any difference? Should I go to the expense of purchasing a rebuilt correct carb? Are the vacuum lines different? Please understand that everything I know about Rochester carburetors has been learned by reading a library book and from studying Lars papers.

As long as the carb is jetted and tuned correctly, one Q-Jet will not run any better than another. If the carb you have is a commercially rebuilt unit, it can stand to be correctly rebuilt and set up - it will have a ton of flaws and defects in the existing "rebuilt" condition. The 77 and 79 carbs are virtually identical, and they are interchangable.
As far as my tuning papers, be sure you e-mail me for the latest copies of the papers. The papers floating around on the Internet are not the latest versions since the people hosting them on their web sites never ask me for updated copies. I revise my papers frequently to add more info, correct existing info, and to keep them up to date with current part numbers. V8FastCars@msn.com
