Default Rear end differencies???

Most of the parts store sell differential assemblies and say they fit 65-79. What is the diffrence compared to 63-64 rear ends? On the other hand if you look individual parts (seals, bearings etc) most of the are for 63-79...

So do you know what is the truth can -64 rear end be used in -65 and never C3/C3 and still what is the exact difference...?

63-64 had a different carrier unit inside the case, IIRC.

Can you buy a 65-79 carrier unit (like brand new Eaton 3-series) and drop it inside a 63-64 case just like that using the existing 63-64 ring&pinion?
How is the 63-64 carrier different? Weaker? Different type clutches&springs..?

I'm running on memory here (and I know it's been discussed here, an archives search should reveal the info), but there was something about the carrier that made it prone to cracking.

The 63-64 used a diff case, which was junk and blew up. Most of them are probably changed to Eaton by now. The 65-70 used Eatons and the case was better but not as good as the Eaton case from 71-79. The clutches used in the 65-70 are better but the spiders are junk. The Clutches used in the 71-79 are junk and the spiders are much better.
You can use an Eaton in a 63-64 but who ever is going to set it up better know the kits sold do not have the correct case shims in them for the 63-64- that's why they are not advertised. You need to buy a separate $75 shim kit and use a surface grinder to dial it in.
New Eaton loaded posi are available for about $500 and have great cases, can't say I like anything else about them. I would buy a new bare case and build it. I have one coming in next week to do this to in fact.
