Default Quadrajet

I want a Quadrajet to put back on my '80. I bought one off of eBay for cheap wanting to rebuild it, but it's for the California 305ci engine and won't work for me without a computer. I need another one, but I'm not 100% what to buy. I really want to rebuild one so that I can understand exactly how they work because right now, they are a mystery to me. Even if I have to pay someone to rebuild it after I screw up, I'm still taking one apart to learn from.

I have Lars qjet rebuild paper and can decipher the carbs based on their part number now, and understand that during the rebuild I can choose the rods and jets for my application. Are there really any big differences between various versions that have been offered by GM through the years? If I recall correctly, Lars paper said that basically all Qjet's are the same with various sized rods, jets and springs.

All I know is that I want an electric choke, which I believe is on the carb I'm looking to buy. After that I'm not sure what to look out for.

from 75 to 80 they had the aneroid metering circuit. There is a sealed bellows in there that increases the richness as barametric pressure increases.

If you want to hook up your carb to the ECM (computer) you'll need a Q-jet E4ME model!
The E4ME has all the electrical gadjets to make it work with a ecm.

He doesn't have an ECM, so he can't use an E4ME carb.

Ak. Mal -
You can run any Chevy passenger car Q-Jet from 1975 through 1980, except 1980 305 California as you've noted. Be sure the carb you choose is a passenger car carb and not a truck carb, as the primary metering rods are different. The 1975-1979 carbs use a hot air choke that can be converted to electric by simply installing a 1980 electric choke unit inthe carb (available from Edlebrock). The following carb numbers will work great, and all will produce the same excellent level of performance:

Thank you for the advice. As for the electric choke, could the electric choke from the E4ME carb that I already have be adapted to an earlier carb from your list?

The electric choke from an 80-81 Q-Jet will bolt right into a 1975-1979 Q-Jet. Just be sure you install it without the cover gasket, or the choke will not be grounded. Also, cap off the hot air inlet to the choke housing, since the carb pulls a slight vacuum on the housing when used with the hot air system.
