Default C3 Rollbar??

A couple months back I was admiring a basically stock 67 small block coupe and noticed it had a rollbar installed in it. No changes made to the interior, so the bar looked factory. I liked the look, so I was wondering? Has anyone ever added a rollbar to their shark? If so, where did you get it, and how was it installed?

Mine is a Jegster Rollbar from Jegs. It is a 4 point bar. I painted it to blend with the interior. Many people don't notice the rollbar right away ;) . Heres a pic for ya .

Vettesic: Kirk Racing, in Alabama I believe, makes roll bars for both coupes and convertibles. They are installed by welding 4 brackets to the frame upon which the bar is bolted. You must cut out portions of the floor behind the seats for these brackets to be installed. Determine what use you will be putting the car to and decide what type of bar you need (4 point, 5 point 6 point).

Mikeo,

I called Jegs last night. The price for the 4 point bar is 129.00 plus 79.00 trucking fee. However, it is not assembled. It must be welded together. Was that the case with yours??

Bionic, 11's whoa nelly ! That's hauling butt , careful you don't run off the island . I'd go to the track your running at and ask them what their requirements are for those times just to be safe, they're the ones that will say yea or nay ;) .

Vettesic, my rollbar came in individual bars, w/ the main hoop being prebent. After the interior is removed, you'll have to cut holes into the floor to access the top of the frame. I built my entire bar outside the car, setting it in as we went to adjust for fit & squareness while building the bar. The bars in the kit will need to be cut while fabricating the bar.

If you go this route, drop me an e-mail (smokedtires@aol.com) and I'll give you some pointers to watch out for while constructing the bar.

If you want a NHRA legal roll bar it has to be a 6-point. The part that sucks is that it has to have front bars along the doors which makes getting in and out a pain. The bar that mikeo has is not a roll bar at all as far as the NHRA is concerned. I think the NHRA now accepts removable front bars so that might be an option, but check the rules first as I'm not 100% on that.

Anyone have an answer to Bionic's question about bolting the bar into welded stubs which are welded to the frame?

Zwede here are the NHRA Rules Section 1A:

4.5 ROLL BAR

Roll bar mandatory in all cars running 11.00 (*7.00) to 11.99 (*7.49) and in convertibles running 11.00 (*7.00) to 13.99 (*8.59), and in dune-buggy type vehicles running 12.00 (*7.50) seconds and slower. Permitted in all cars. See General Regulations 4.10, 10.6.

4.6 ROLL CAGE

Roll cage mandatory in cars running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker, or any car exceeding 135 mph (217.2 km/h). Full bodied cars, with unaltered firewall, floor and body (from firewall rearward, wheeltubs permitted), running between 10.00 (*6.40) and 10.99 (*6.99) roll bar permitted in place of roll cage. Cars running between 7.50 (*4.50) and 9.99 (*6.39) must have chassis inspected every three-years by the ASN and have a serialised sticker affixed to cage before participation. Must conform to specs for body style used, as listed in General Regulations 4.11, 10.6.

ROLLBAR vs. ROLLCAGE

What's the difference between a rollbar and a rollcage? As far as NHRA is concered, a rollbar consists of a main hoop, two struts going back and a driver's-side door bar. Most of these setups have a door bar on the passenger side as well and are referred to as a six-point bars. The traditional four-point rollbar is no longer acceptable, although it's not illegal until the car runs 11.99 or quicker. A rollcage is the full deal. It must completely encircle the driver in an attempt to protect the driver from any angle. In addition to the six-point system, the cage has bars along the tops of the window openings, across the top of the windshield and along the windshield pillars.

My bar is indeed a ROLLBAR, not a ROLLCAGE. It is welded to plates that are welded directly to the top of the frame. My bar was installed for autocross purposes not drag racing, but according to the tech person at Jegs, he said that their bars are NHRA & IHRA approved. The number of points required for your car will depend on how fast your running which is why I told Bionic that it would be best to contact his local race track for specifics to his car. :chevy

Mikeo,

Sounds like we are agreeing. The point I was trying to make is that a 4-point rollbar is the same as no rollbar at all as per the NHRA. A coupe can run 12.00 and slower with no bar or cage at all. Convertible is 14.00 and slower.

If a car goes faster than 12.00 (14.00 for ragtops) it needs a 6-point bar.

It's really a shame that the NHRA does not allow 4-point rollbars in the 11 second range. There are many street cars that run 11 secs and most of them refuse to install 6-point bars as it would make the car unusable on the street. Some of these people go street racing instead after being turned away from the strip.

go to your track and ask the tech inspector.. there's a chance you could put in a 6 point bar and make the door bars removeable as long as they were safe when installed. it's worth asking anyway

has anyone thought of putting the bar inside the door?

I have been thinking about that you would have a 4 point looking in but yet still have a 6

have an interlock or something??

zwede you made me curious with your post, so I did alittle research on the web to find out you were correct :bb . Very strange that you can take the same car that you would need a 6pt rollbar on the strip and be able to race on a road track around corners and straights at about the same ~135 mph speeds with just a 4 pt. Maybe it's more dangerous going straight down a 1/4 mile strip  .

Why do you think they call them the NHRA safety ****'s??!!
There is a reason so few people get killed drag racing at NHRA events...
