Default Rear Diff. Cross member Lube?

I am in the process of putting the rear diff. back in my 70 BB coupe. Took the 3:08 out and put a 3:70 in. Thought I would have a bit of gear in the car to play around this summer.

Knowing that the 3:08 will be going back in next year, I want to put some grease on the mounts from the crossmember to the frame. Hopefully that will make it easier to break it loose next year.

Any pros or cons that you know of for using the grease?

Don't use grease. Use the same kind of anti seize you would get for head bolts.

Default Anti-Sieze

You mean to put the anti-sieze on the frame instead of grease?

Will do.

Did you mean on the threads of the bolts or the contact surfaces of the mounts themselves? I may have misunderstood you. Contact areas, grease is okay. Bolts...use anti seize. Sorry for the confusion.

I think he's talking about the contact areas... They can really get stuck, as im sure you know. Sometimes you need a big prybar or puller to get them off.

Grease is fine... I used on mine for the same reason as you.

...grease, copper never seize, vaseline, KY Jelly would all do the trick...

Bob,

Let me know how you like the 3.70 with a B/B. I assume you have a 4 speed??

I am in the process of selecting a ratio for a re-build!!!

Default 370 final drive

Dip51,

Yes my car is a 4 spd. I ran the car for many years with 3:55 final drive and think that is the ideal ratio for all around performance and highway. The 4 spd is a wide ratio.

For some strange reason, I sold or traded that rear end away. Can't remember which but now think that was a mistake. Wish I had it to put in cause that would be the final drive of choice for me.

The extra 3:70 posi was sitting on my shelf and I wanted something more performance oriented for this summer other than the orig. 3:08. 3:70 may be a little too steep if you drive on the highway much but will probably make the car quicker for those trips down memory lane or the drag strip, which ever you perfer.

Haven't driven the car in 15 yrs and am just getting it running again. Waiting on new tires to arrive and am putting new bushing in the rear suspension.

Will let you know how I like the 3:70 final.

Default My Excuse

Well, I got involved in road racing and the street car took a back seat till I got SCCA GT-1 racing out of my blood/wallet.

After that, the car developed a fuel leak in the back. Knew that it was either the tank or the line rusted through. Just shoved the car into the back of the garage with the cover on it. No time or ambition to mess with it.

Raising kids, going back to school, and a couple of job changes later, my teenage daughter heads off to college. Now I have some time on my hands.

Being a tinkerer, got the car out and started investigating the fuel leak. A tank and main fuel line replacement later, 15 years and now the car is running again.

RR brake caliper is leaking so decided to fix that. Next thing I know the entire rear suspension is out from under the car getting new bushings, a 3:70 posi and a clean and paint.

That is it for this year as I just want the car ready to drive for the Summer. Next Winter, will tackle the front end bushings and A/C.

Sort of told you how the watch works when all you wanted to know was the time! Sorry.
